Healthy breakfasts

A common request from clients when they’re changing their diet towards a healthier one – which often means adding in more protein and healthy fats, and reducing starchy carbs – is what to eat for breakfast instead of cereals, toast, muffins or sweet dairy yoghurt.

Here are some savoury and sweeter options to give you some variety. I’ve included a few treats for the weekends like my fluffy chia pancakes.

These suggestions and recipes are healthy, delicious, gut-loving, and gluten as well as dairy free.

Savoury

  • Paleo bread or sprouted gluten free grain toast with avocado, tomatoes, a protein like smoked fish, pate, sardines, bresaola and rocket or baby spinach or sprouts

  • Toasted slice of pumpkin (done 4 times in the toaster) with a protein such as fish, meat or eggs and rocket or baby spinach

  • Paleo bread or sprouted gluten free grain toast with stir fried mushrooms and fresh basil

  • Paleo or sprouted toast with nut butter, avocado and sliced fresh tomato

  • Prosciutto, egg and veggie muffins. You can make this ahead. Recipe here

  • Hidden greens with bacon or sausage. Recipe here

  • Eggs any way – poached, scrambled, vegetable omelette, pre made frittata. Add some greens

  • Broth with a handful of greens and a protein. Recipe here

  • Soup like pumpkin and broccoli. Could add a protein like bacon, or leftover chicken

  • Leftover vegetable and meatballs. Make ahead and reheat. Here's one recipe for turkey meatballs

  • Beetroot salad with bacon. Salad recipe here

  • Fill half and avocado with an egg and grill or bake, dressing with sprouts or chopped herbs

Sweeter

  • Quick 3-ingredient banana pancakes. Recipe here

  • Coconut or whole dairy (if tolerated) yoghurt with (wild) berries, mixed nuts and seeds

  • Paleo or sprouted toast with nut butter, ½ sliced banana and coconut flakes

  • Paleo granola with milk of your choosing and berries or papaya. Recipe here

  • Smoothies e.g. detox green, pick me up, super berry, mega magnesium, choc-cauli. Some recipes here

  • Super green muffins. Recipe here

  • Paleo breakfast cookie using nut flours

  • Quinoa pear porridge. Recipe here

  • Breakfast bars (no added sweeteners please)

  • Buckwheat cinnamon groats (soaked the night before)
