The link between stomach acid & osteoporesis | osteoprosis

There's a significant link between low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) and an increased risk of osteoporosis.

Stomach acid is vital for

  1. Calcium absorption – Stomach acid (HCl) responsible for the proper absorption of calcium, which requires an acidic environment to dissolve and be absorbed in the intestines. When levels are low, calcium absorption is impaired, leading to lower availability of this crucial mineral for bone health

  2. Protein malabsorption – HCl is also necessary for breaking down proteins into amino acids, which are vital for bone health, as bones are partly made of collagen, a protein structure. Low levels can lead to protein malabsorption, weakening the bone matrix

  3. Vitamin & mineral absorption – Low HCl can impair the absorption of essential minerals and vitamins needed for bone formation and density eg magnesium, zinc and vit D, all of which are critical for bone formation and density

  4. Vitamin B12 absorption – Low stomach acid also affects vitamin B12 absorption, which plays a role in overall cellular health, including bone cells. Long-term B12 deficiency can contribute to bone density loss

Long-term PPI use

PPI (protein pump inhibitor) medication used to reduce stomach acid is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures, especially when used long-term. These drugs decrease the stomach’s ability to produce acid, impairing calcium absorption and bone health over time

Gut health & nutrient absorption

Stomach acid also helps kill harmful bacteria in the stomach and creates a good digestive environment. Low levels can lead to imbalances in gut flora and overall lower nutrient absorption.

How to raises your stomach acid?

Sip apple cider vinegar with meals and/or supplement. If you react, you could need to heal your stomach first as low levels might have damaged your stomach mucous lining.
