NAC, glutathione and detoxification for mould, mycotoxins and more
You may have heard of the supplements NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) and Glutathione.
They support glutathione conjugation, or the carrying out of toxins. Glutathione also acts as an antioxidant – although using a separate pathway in the body – which fights disease.
These two supplements are where many people begin with detoxification, including of mycotoxins – the toxic byproducts of mould. This is important because one in four of us has a genetic glitch where our body cannot detoxify these substances by itself. This can lead to CIRS, Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
But in reality, the glutathione pathway is just one of 6 that the liver uses in Phase 2 detoxification.
What’s Phase 2detoxifiction? It’s where the liver attaches a molecule to a chemical to render it less harmful and carry it out of your body.
The other 5 pathways are…
– Sulfonation
– Acetylation
– Methylation
– Glucuronidation
– Glycation
We need all of these detox pathways to be open and supported to detox optimally, including to get rid of harmful myctoxins.
On the matter of mycotoxins, did you know that certain pathways are used for certain mycotoxins only? So if you just support glutathione conjugation, while it can help carry out two types of myctoxins, others will remain in your body.
Also, if your glutathione conjugation pathway is blocked or hindered by genetic glitches, taking NAC or glutathione may actually make you sicker.
Eating a balanced diet filled with a variety of vegetables, animal proteins and good fats is vital for good general detoxification.
But understanding WHAT you need to detox and HOW this is best done for YOUR body can really help when usual methods don’t work.
