'Leaky mouth' causes bad breath & inflammation

'Leaky mouth syndrome' is where the mouth allows harmful substances to enter directly into the bloodstream. When ongoing, this can cause significant health problems.

Symptoms might include bad breath, gum inflammation, decay, sores and systemic inflammation.

Systemic inflammation can show up as fatigue, pain, digestive issues, skin problems, frequent illness, brain fog, mood changes, metabolic issues, respiratory symptoms, and heart health risks Something not to be taken lightly!

The causes of leaky mouth include

  • Oral dysbiosis - harmful bacteria, or imbalances in the oral microbiome

  • Gum Disease - plaque buildup, which can inflame gums and allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream

  • High carb diet - this feeds harmful bacteria, promoting tooth decay and inflammation

  • Dry mouth - reduced saliva can lead to more oral infections

  • Poor oral hygiene - inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to plaque buildup and decay

What to do about leaky mouth?

  1. Hydration with clean water and a low sugar, refined carb and alcohol diet that's packed with healthy proteins, fats and fibre are important. Smoking is also very disruptive

  2. But for people who have already optimised their diet and oral hygiene - and even if they have the all clear from their dentist - I recommend an oral microbiome test. It's amazing what is often found! Based on results, oral probiotics and other support might be warranted

  3. But also, what goes on in the mouth impacts our gut, and vice versa. Infections or imbalances in our gut can cause oral imbalances too, so gut testing can help resolve this

  4. Hormone balance matters too. They can impact oral health by influencing blood flow, immune response and inflammation in the gums, making gum disease and oral sensitivity more likely during hormonal fluctuations.

  5. General anti-Inflammatory foods and supplements to support gum health include non-starchy vegetables, green tea, turmeric, vitamin C and CoQ10 for gum health.
