Is it your thyroid or hormones blocking your weight loss?

Many symptoms of menopause and thyroid dysfunction, including weight gain, overlap. This can be confusing when trying to work out what’s going on.

Hypothyroidism and menopause often go hand-in-hand, although hypothyroidism can happen at any time.

So what’s the link?

There’s an interplay between the hormonal changes in menopause and thyroid dysfunction.

During menopause, oestrogen and progesterone levels go up and down, eventually dropping significantly.

Some symptoms of low oestrogen like fatigue, poor memory, moodiness and weight gain are the same in hypothyroidism (slow thyroid).

Every single cell in your body has thyroid receptors that allow thyroid hormone to enter your cells for metabolism, or energy. They're vital.

But low oestrogen stifles hormonal balance throughout your body, including in your brain’s pituitary gland. The pituitary governs how much TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is made by your thyroid gland, which in turn impacts your thyroid hormone levels.

More specifically, oestrogen affects your thyroid's ability to produce enough thyroxine (T4, raw thyroid hormone material) and triiodothyronine (T3, useable thyroid hormone) to meet your needs.

In response, the pituitary releases more TSH into the bloodstream telling the thyroid to increase T4 and T3. Your TSH level will continue to rise until you’re diagnosed with hypothyroidism. This is bad because 90% of hypothyroidism is autoimmune where your body attacks its own tissue.

In terms of weight loss, while it’s normal to have low hormones in menopause (but not TOO low), it’s NOT normal to have a SLOW thyroid.

Low hormones make weight loss trickier, but IMPOSSIBLE with a slow thyroid.

I do deep hormone and thyroid testing in my EMPOWER HER program to work out the root cause of your weight gain and weight loss resistance.

That way we can resolve those things naturally, finally allowing you to lose weight for good.

Everything in Empower Her is personalised as YOU are unique.

Menopause doesn’t HAVE to mean weight gain, low energy, brain fog, mood swings – the end of life.
