7 clues there could be more than one piece to your health puzzle
A common things I hear from people is, "I've dealt with gut issues for years."
Or "It started with my hormones."
Or "I just want to lose weight."
Yet when we start unpacking the story, it often becomes clear that those symptoms are only one part of a bigger picture.
There may be digestive symptoms, food reactions, fatigue, poor sleep, rising cholesterol, increasing blood sugar, anxiety, brain fog, hormone changes and weight loss resistance all occurring at the same time.
This is often where people become frustrated.
They've seen practitioners. They've done tests. They've followed recommendations. Yet they still don't feel well.
One possible reason for this is that symptoms are frequently viewed in isolation, while the body functions as an interconnected system.
Clue 1 – Digestive Symptoms Are Only One Part Of The Story
Bloating, reflux, constipation, diarrhoea and food intolerances are common reasons people seek help.
But the gut influences far more than digestion.
Gut health can affect nutrient absorption, inflammation, immune function, hormone metabolism, mood and even blood sugar regulation.
When the gut is struggling, symptoms may appear throughout the body.
Clue 2 – Food Reactions Seem To Be Increasing
Many women notice that foods they once tolerated suddenly seem problematic.
The list of ‘safe foods’ gets smaller.
Symptoms become unpredictable.
This can sometimes occur when factors such as gut dysfunction, histamine issues, immune activation or nervous system stress are present.
The food itself may not always be the entire story.
Clue 3 – Energy Never Quite Returns
Even after improving sleep, changing diet or taking supplements, energy can remain stubbornly low.
When fatigue is accompanied by digestive symptoms, hormonal changes, brain fog or food reactions, it may be worth looking beyond a single explanation.
The body requires many systems to work together efficiently in order to produce and maintain energy.
Clue 4 – Hormonal Changes Don't Explain Everything
Perimenopause and menopause can absolutely contribute to symptoms.
But sometimes women are told to blame every symptom on hormones when there are clearly other pieces involved.
If digestive symptoms, food sensitivities, fatigue, inflammation or immune issues are also present, hormones may be only one part of the picture.
Clue 5 – Blood Sugar And Cholesterol Markers Are Changing
One pattern becoming increasingly common is worsening metabolic health despite people making a genuine effort to look after themselves.
Blood sugar begins creeping up. HbA1c rises. Triglycerides increase. Cholesterol changes. Weight becomes harder to manage. These markers don't exist in isolation.
They can be influenced by inflammation, stress, sleep, hormones, gut health, physical activity and overall metabolic function.
Clue 6 – Brain Fog, Anxiety Or Overwhelm Have Become Normal
The gut, brain, hormones and nervous system are constantly communicating.
When one area becomes dysregulated, effects are often felt elsewhere.
This doesn't mean symptoms are psychological.
It means the body operates as an integrated network rather than separate compartments.
Clue 7 – Every Practitioner Finds Something Different
This may be the biggest clue of all.
One practitioner focuses on hormones.
Another focuses on the gut.
Another focuses on stress.
Another focuses on cholesterol.
None of them are necessarily wrong.
They may simply be looking at different pieces of the same puzzle. Yet not necessarily putting them together.
What Many People Miss
When symptoms span multiple body systems, there is often a temptation to chase each symptom separately.
A supplement for digestion. A supplement for sleep. A supplement for cholesterol. A supplement for energy.
Sometimes this helps.
Sometimes it creates an expensive cupboard full of half-used products.
A more effective approach is often to step back and ask
What patterns are emerging?
Where do these symptoms overlap?
What underlying factors could be influencing multiple systems simultaneously?
Common areas worth investigating may include
Gut function and microbiome health
Blood sugar regulation and metabolic health
Histamine and immune reactivity
Hormonal changes
Nervous system load and stress physiology
Sleep quality
Environmental factors, including mould and water-damaged buildings
The Bigger Picture
The women I work with are rarely looking for another quick fix.
Most have already tried plenty.
What they're looking for is an explanation that makes sense. An explanation that connects the gut symptoms, food reactions, fatigue, brain fog, hormonal changes and metabolic shifts into a coherent story.
Because sometimes the missing piece isn't another diagnosis. It's understanding how the pieces fit together. And that's often where meaningful progress begins.
